After having written several articles on martial arts in general, I thought it might be a good idea to write an article about a topic that is close to my heart.

Lately I have come across a few articles, videos, pod casts that are highlighting the use of what is being called “Wing Chun techniques” in different situations i.e. MMA, self defence, etc…

The truth of the matter is that Wing Chun is not simply a collection of techniques. It’s much more than that. In fact, it is a goal, plain and simple and the goal is the hit. And the goal is supported by principles, theories and drills or exercises that condition responses and solutions to resistance.

The “Wing Chun techniques” that are being show cased are what I prefer to call “Fix Hits” and shouldn’t be compared to a “Jab” or a “Cross” or “Roundhouse kick”.

Wing Chun movements or “Fix Hits” are used to disrupt balance, remove obstruction, disorganize the opponent’s structure so that hits (either punches, elbows, knees, kicks or even headbutts) can be successful.

Wing Chun is not a style of martial art but rather it is a system of martial arts education, with its sole purpose being that of conditioning responses to the opponent’s resistance to being hit.

Simply put Wing Chun is the hit!
